Discovering the Sunshine Coast Through Art

There are some places that simply stay with you. The Sunshine Coast is one of those places.

Stretching from golden beaches and rugged headlands to lush hinterland, glassy waterways and welcoming coastal towns, the Sunshine Coast has become one of Queensland’s most sought after holiday destinations. People come here to relax, reconnect with nature and slow down from the pace of everyday life. There is a feeling here that is difficult to describe until you’ve experienced it for yourself.

When I moved to the Sunshine Coast, I was eager to discover my new home through an artist’s perspective. Rather than simply visiting the well known landmarks, I found myself looking for the details that make each place unique. The changing light across the ocean, the textures of pandanus trees, the character of local surf clubs, the quiet walking tracks and the colourful beach culture all became part of my creative journey.

Before long, those experiences became the inspiration for my Sunshine Coast Art Series.

My artistic style draws inspiration from vintage travel posters, interpreted through a contemporary graphic and geometric approach. Rather than creating a literal representation of each location, I simplify the landscape into bold shapes, clean lines and carefully selected colour palettes. Each artwork is an artistic depiction of our rugged yet beautiful coastline, celebrating its distinctive landmarks while capturing the feeling of being there. I hope my work evokes a sense of nostalgia, inviting people to reconnect with treasured holidays, favourite beaches and special memories made along the Sunshine Coast.

One of the things I love most about this region is its extraordinary light. It has a warmth and softness that constantly changes throughout the day. Early mornings bring gentle pastel colours as the sun rises over the Pacific Ocean. By afternoon, the coastline glows with vibrant blues and rich golden tones. Even on an ordinary day, the light seems to breathe life into the landscape.

That ever changing light continues to inspire every artwork I create.

The Sunshine Coast also has a remarkable ability to make people feel calm. Whether you’re standing on the coastal rocks at Moffat Beach, walking beneath the towering trees of Noosa National Park, watching surfers at Coolum Beach or exploring the peaceful waters of the Noosa Everglades, there is a sense that life naturally slows down.

Perhaps that is why so many visitors return year after year. The Sunshine Coast offers more than beautiful scenery. It offers space to breathe, time to reconnect and moments that become lasting memories.

As an artist, I feel incredibly fortunate to live in a place that continues to inspire my creativity every day. Each artwork in my Sunshine Coast Art Series is my way of celebrating the places that locals treasure and visitors fall in love with.

My artwork is not intended to be an exact photographic record. Instead, it captures the essence and emotion of a place through simplified forms, bold colour and a graphic geometric style inspired by the timeless appeal of vintage travel posters. My hope is that each piece not only celebrates the beauty of the Sunshine Coast but also becomes a reminder of moments spent here, whether it was a family holiday, a weekend escape or simply a peaceful walk beside the ocean.

One of the greatest joys of creating digitally is that my studio can travel with me. With my iPad and Apple Pencil always close by, I can sketch ideas whenever inspiration strikes, whether I’m sitting beside the ocean, enjoying a coffee in a coastal village or watching the changing light across the landscape. That freedom allows each artwork to grow from genuine moments of connection with the places that inspire me.

The Sunshine Coast has long been a sought after destination, not only because of its natural beauty but because of the way it makes people feel. There is an unmistakable sense of ease here. It is a place where creativity flourishes, where nature gently reminds us to slow down and where inspiration can be found around almost every corner.

For me, that is the greatest gift of living on the Sunshine Coast. It continues to surprise me, inspire me and fill me with gratitude every time I pick up my Apple Pencil. I hope my artwork shares a little of that feeling and brings the relaxed beauty of the Sunshine Coast into the homes of those who love this remarkable part of Queensland.
